NYPL Labs Linked Open Data Internship
NYPL Labs has an exciting internship opportunity for an intern interested in learning about and working with linked open data in a library context. The selected candidate will work directly with the Lab’s group to help tackle difficult data-centric problems through the adoption of linked data practices and methods. The intern will gain experience from a range of activities including: researching best practices, helping to design, test, build and use tools for bulk data remediation, cross walking metadata, and visualizing NYPL datasets.
Professional Interactions
Interns will interact with a range of professionals working in NYPL Lab’s Metadata Service Unit, Research & Development Group, Digital Imaging Unit and Rights and Reproductions as well as a the Librarians, Archivists and Curators throughout the library that Lab’s collaborates with daily.
Professional Development
Interns will receive hands-on training working with library data and standards (EAD, MODS, MARC) in addition to becoming proficient in linked open data standards, practices and application. The selected candidate will also have the chance to develop their technical proficiencies including writing applications in scripting languages and programmatically interacting with library data systems.
Schedule
This internship will run from January 27- May 15, 2015
Interns are expected to work 1-2 day/wk for a maximum of 12 hours per week
Responsibilities:
Under the mentorship of NYPL Lab’s Head of Semantic Applications and Data Research the selected candidate will collaborate with members of NYPL Lab’s Metadata Service Unit and R&D Group in developing a new linked data tools and services. Specify for the Spring 2015 internship, the candidate will be assisting in the development of a new controlled authority system for use in metadata creation and remediation. The candidate will contribute to the project though conducting research, analyzing datasets, testing tools and contributing to development when possible.
Qualifications:
All candidates must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program.
Candidates in MLIS, Archives or Computer Science programs preferred.
Local to New York City and able to meet and work at NYPL’s 42nd Street Central Branch and/or the Long Island City Library Service Center.
Some proficiency with scripting languages such as Python or Ruby and a desire to build those skills.
Familiar with Linked Data concepts and technologies.
