{"id":78,"date":"2015-10-13T23:26:45","date_gmt":"2015-10-13T23:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/art.nycdh.org\/?p=78"},"modified":"2017-09-07T15:37:23","modified_gmt":"2017-09-07T15:37:23","slug":"steering-committee-meeting-101315","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nycdh.org\/art\/steering-committee-meeting-101315\/","title":{"rendered":"Steering Committee Meeting 10\/13\/15"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NYC Digital Art History Steering Committee Meeting 10\/13\/15<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Participants: Samantha Deutch, Francine Snyder, Gabriel Rodriguez, Jason Varone (SD, FS, GR, JV) &#8211; Location: Robert Rauschenberg Foundation<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some recent projects:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tropy &#8211; Mellon Grant, Purpose is to organize images with notes. \u00a0Tagged images.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ARies &#8211; Space to compare, analyze, annotate, and group images&#8211;images take priority over text.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mirador &#8211; place to control images.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">FMP 14 &#8211; Research notes, images, easy catalog generation for profs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joan Mitchell foundation: template for image catalog. \u00a0Create a Living Legacy initiative.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SD made her own database in FMP, template for art object research, provenance, tombstone info.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">POWRR website, Illinois University, lists solutions for data archiving.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Data Vis. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3D printing lab at NYU &#8211; La Guardia Studio<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Review of NYC DH &#8211; Minutes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Could do a Kress sponsored grant for DAH, some organization that will deal with the accounting for us.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sotheby\u2019s institute sponsoring a new award with ARLIS for a paper. \u00a0SD is on the subcommittee. \u00a0$3000 for a project, need a library mentor. \u00a0ARLIS member has to nominate it. \u00a0If the paper wins, the library gets $2000.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Are we ready for an award? Have only had one meeting. \u00a0SD will ask around.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Programming for next NYDAH meeting:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Where do we want to do it, what sort of programming do we want.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visualization probably a big draw.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lightning round for visualization?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Come with your problem: \u00a0Bring your own technology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Preservation would also be a draw. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frick workshop covers different digital tools you can use for Art History. \u00a0Photo archive images, image recognition technology, they talk about ARies &#8211; data scraping &#8211; Kimono goes into Google Spreadsheets and CartoDB. \u00a0Cytoscape. \u00a0D3. \u00a02 hour workshop. \u00a0All through the lens of art historical problems. \u00a0Formal talk. \u00a0Working with John Resig, searching by images.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Proposed programming: One session earlier in the week for a Frick-type workshop, and a second session where you bring your art historical problem and shop it around to people with different tools to solve your problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">JV and FS mention that the there was interest to have students, not just professors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IFA example: getting tech people there is crucial, keeps conversation moving forward.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">JV may be able to talk about D3.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is a desire for DAH tools out of the box. \u00a0But need your data to be in a usable format.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rooms? Maybe IFA, JV will look into it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are too young of an institution to look into funding. But could use some small funds for snacks, drinks etc. to bring people in the door.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Could do one day event instead: 10am-12pm for presentations, 1:30-4:30 for open session, bring your art history problem etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lightning talks like at the Frick: \u00a0JV can do D3, SD can do her data scraping talk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As broad as possible, FS thinks we should present as many tools as possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Evaluation at the end, suggestion box, a sign-up. \u00a0Gather members both digitally and analog.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We should send a proposal to the whole DAH group to get feedback and gather additional speakers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whole group should meet again to plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GR may be able to attend next DH steering committee meeting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Should task group to make a Wiki for DAH tools. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Next Steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Need to find a date. SD will email Barbara and check, JV will check on spaces at the IFA.
