SUMMARY:Survey Design for the Humanities
DESCRIPTION:While surveys are typically thought of as part of the social sciences’ toolkit\, DH research can also benefit from designing\, conducting\, and examining surveys.  This session will introduce participants to survey design best practices and recommendations on how to think about the results you obtain. \nWe will work with Qualtrics – a survey software platform – using their 30 day trial version of Design XM. SUMMARY:Out of the Classroom with Fulcrum:  A Digital Note Taking App for Student Fieldwork
DESCRIPTION:For many instructors who teach in New York\, the city is seen as a pedagogical asset that can be used to extend their classroom.  As a result\, many courses include assignments that ask students to leave campus and to explore\, examine\, and evaluate the city as primary source material.  At Fordham University\, Fulcrum – a digital note-taking app – provides a flexible framework for students to document their out-of-the-classroom experience (in text\, photos\, video\, and audio) in a way that can be easily consolidated and shared with the class as a whole.  The data recorded in Fulcrum can then be extracted and visualized on any number of qualitative and/or quantitative platforms or simply explored on the FulcrumApp.com website and map. \nThis workshop will give participants access to Fulcrum and the opportunity to test this app in the neighborhood around Fordham University.  Our workshop data will then be examined back in a classroom and we will discuss how this app can benefit not only undergraduate and graduate-level courses but academic research as a whole. \nEquipment Requirements: Please bring a working (charged) cell phone if you can. \n

SUMMARY:Social Annotation and Reading: Digital Pedagogy for Class Texts
DESCRIPTION:Perusall (Perusall.com) is a fantastic new social reading and annotation tool that has come out of Harvard and the University of Texas that addresses the age-old question: “Are my students doing the reading?” Fordham University has implemented this tool in a number of classes this academic year and been impressed with the results. Come for an introduction to Perusall\, a discussion of the faculty and student experience\, and an exploration of the analytics and AI grading system that automatically scores student annotations for faculty. \nRequirements: none.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Scalar
DESCRIPTION:Scalar is a free\, open source authoring and publishing platform developed by the University of Southern California that’s designed to make it easy for authors (faculty or students) to write long-form\, born-digital scholarship online. Projects that are best suited to Scalar are media rich and able to take advantage of the unique capabilities of digital writing. Scalar also supports collaborative authoring\, reader commentary\, and the annotation of video\, audio\, images\, and text. \nFordham University beta tested Scalar for academic use during the Fall 2016 semester\, and now has opened up access to this tool to all faculty\, staff and students. Scalar has been used in graduate and undergraduate courses to help Fordham students become comfortable creating multi-threaded\, non-linear texts\, and using paths\, tags\, and annotations to innovatively curate their material. \nThis Introduction to Scalar will be both an overview of the tool\, as well as hands-on workshop to explore Scalar through the creation of a quick Scalar project. \nAttendees are urged to bring images and text that they would like to use in this workshop\, although generic material will be provided as well. \nSkill Level\nBeginner \nPrerequisites\nNone \nRequirements\nA collection of sample images and text would be useful\, but not necessary to bring. \n
