      Hello Friends!

Our first order of business is to find a time which we could all be available to participate in a Google Hangout. Would Wednesday, October 2nd at 7 pm EST be a good time for everyone to meet? Send me an email at aaronplasek@gmail.com and let me know. (If another time and day would be better, tell me that too.)

      Questions on the agenda:

      (1) Should we set up a physical space in New York City where we can meet? (Possible spaces we might be able to use include NYU Humanities Initiative or the Studio@Butler at Columbia.)

      (2) What are our shared problems? How can our group usefully explore the challenges and offer solutions? How can our shared interest in DH help us to explore these problems in new ways?

      (3) Is there any particular outreach services our group should facilitate? Should we have lectures? Brown bag lunches? A paper repository of adjunct contracts? A spreadsheet of what each university pays its instructors (a la The Adjunct Project)? Hot-air balloon rides? How might our attention and resources best be focused?

      (4) [insert your own agenda item here]

Looking forward to our future discussions!

Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Aaron!  7PM is the worst time for me on Wednesdays.  Evenings, the best times for me to chat are 8PM or 10:30PM.

      1) If any of you have access to those spaces, I’d be happy to meet there.  If we’re small enough (four people or less) we can meet in my windowless office at NYU; larger than that I can reserve a conference room.  I would personally also be okay with meeting in a cafe or bar.

      2) Sometimes I think that DH allows people to do more humanities research without an academic position, but then I remember The Professor and the Madman and I’m not so sure.  But maybe?

I think DH’s connections to museums, libraries and other alt-ac makes it more flexible in general.  It’s not all about tenure-track teaching positions, or even full-time postdocs.

      3) Before we do a lot of outreach, I think we should do some visioning of a world where independent and contingent researchers are … what?  In the meantime, we should make sure that we have visibility at any DH events, so that potential confederates know that we exist.

      4) Visioning!  (Don’t worry, the visioning doesn’t last forever.)

Alas, I also can’t make tomorrow at 7 pm either, but I can meet up at 8:30 pm. Would that work better, Angus? (I’ll be at the Humanities Initiative space at 8 pm if you want to meet up there and be in the same physical room for the gchat, Angus.)

Also, Dimitris was able to confirm that he could meet at 7 pm tomorrow. Not sure if he’s available to chat at 8:30 though. What do you think, Dimitris?

Yes, I can do 8:30, but if most of us are going to be virtual I’ll be virtual too.  My google account is grvsmth.
