      Hi all,

The Brown Institute for Media Innovation is hosting a week-long event at Columbia University on the pairing of storytelling and technology:

“Bit By Bit”: Experiments in digital storytelling

      February 21 – March 1, 2014

“Bit By Bit” is a week-long exploration and reflection on the powerful pairing of story and technology and the roles they play in society—discovering and reimagining the poignant and the persuasive, the confining and liberating. It will comprise of a student workshop and two-day challenge that pairs leaders in technology and storytelling.

The open, shareable nature of digital tools — code, data, and algorithms — has changed the relationship between creator and audience. Stories are spilling off screens and into the real world and a new storytelling grammar is being shaped due to shifts in media consumption and device penetration. On Saturday, February 22nd a group of storytellers, hackers, makers, game developers, and experience designers will come together for a day full of experimentation, coding, networking, and fun. Designed to push at the edges of form and function, Bit by Bit invites participants to challenge the way stories are found, told, and experienced. Over the course of the day, teams will work to design, build, and present a plan for a project of their choosing. The challenge: harness storytelling and technology as a way to create a unique storytelling experience. Teams will have 12 hours to attack the challenge. From there, they will have a week to hone their projects.

Bit by Bit’s student experiments are just one part of the event. During the week following, seven teams —pairs consisting of a professional technologist and a seasoned storyteller — will work together to create something new. They will present their work on March 1st at a public workshop. Students participating in our event on February 22nd will have their work shown at this event. Students will also have the chance to help the professional teams as they do their work. Industry exposure, mentorship opportunities, and cash and prizes are just a few reasons to join.
