The Graduate Center, CUNY is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at The City University of New York (CUNY), the nation’s largest urban public university. With over 35 doctoral and master’s programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. The Graduate Center’s commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives, including its Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), a 200,000 square-foot facility in upper Manhattan, designed to promote collaboration among scientists in five areas of global research and innovation: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences.
The Graduate Center (GC) benefits from highly ambitious and diverse students and alumni—who in turn teach hundreds of thousands of undergraduates every year. Through its public programs, the Graduate Center enhances New York City’s intellectual and cultural life.
The Graduate Center’s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) creates and connects opportunities for GC students to grow as educators and scholars within the nation’s largest public urban university system. The TLC helps beginning graduate student instructors prepare for and adjust to CUNY’s classrooms and supports more experienced instructors as they experiment with and integrate additional pedagogical methods into their teaching. The TLC also works closely with staff, administrators, and adjunct and faculty across the CUNY system to create communities of practice and exploration around teaching and learning.
A leader in the emerging field of digital humanities, Graduate Center Digital Initiatives (GCDI) builds and sustains an active community around the shared ideal of a “Digital GC,” where scholars and technologists explore new modes of inquiry that integrate digital tools and methods into the research, teaching, and service missions of the CUNY Graduate Center. GCDI fosters a diverse constellation of digital projects that advance the research mission of the institution and offer hands-on computational experience to GC students, faculty, and staff.
The TLC and GCDI seek two Open Educational Technology Specialists who will work on programming related to CUNY’s institutional investment in Open Educational Resources (OER). Beginning in 2017 and continuing into the upcoming academic year, New York State has made significant investments in supporting the development, deployment, and integration of OER across the curriculum, saving CUNY students more than $8m in the first year of the initiative alone.
CUNY faculty have expressed desire to host OER and to stage student engagement with them on CUNY-built and maintained platforms. Two such platforms are supported at The Graduate Center: the CUNY Academic Commons (CAC) and Manifold Scholarship. The Open Educational Technology Specialists will support faculty and staff from across CUNY who are doing OER-related work on these platforms.
The Open Educational Technology Specialists will work closely together, with one reporting to the Director of the Teaching and Learning Center and one reporting to the Director of the Graduate Center’s Digital Initiatives. These positions are funded for two years.
Duties include but are not limited to:
* Runs workshops and provides consultations on strategies for open teaching with OER for CUNY faculty, including Graduate Center student instructors.
* Serves as an active member of the CAC team, interfacing frequently with Community Facilitators and the development team as the CAC develops and integrates new features to bolster support for OER-related work.
* Collaborates with partner programs at the Graduate Center and throughout CUNY on educational technology projects.
* Utilizes the Manifold platform to help CUNY faculty and graduate students build OER resources for classroom use.
* Attends meetings with OER coordinators throughout CUNY.
* Supports GC students engaged in the production of Open Educational Resources.
* Compiles data and writes reports on OER activity on GC-maintained platforms;
* Presents at conferences and workshops across CUNY and beyond about the CAC and Manifold Scholarship;
* Attends regular meetings with GCDI and TLC teams.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree and four years’ relevant experience required.
A preferred candidate should have:
* Significant experience working with WordPress.
* Familiarity with Digital Humanities scholarship and projects.
* College-level teaching experience.
* Master’s degree or graduate coursework.
