Postdoctoral Associate at the Thomas A. Edison Papers

The Thomas A. Edison Papers at Rutgers University is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate with experience in Digital Humanities to identify, select, and help implement digital tools that can enhance the usability of the project’s digital book and image editions, make its metadata more accessible, and better integrate its editions. The selective book edition of transcribed and annotated documents is in the process of being transitioned to open-access PDF and EPUB3 formats on Johns Hopkins University Press’s Project Muse while our image edition of more than 154,000 documents uses the Omeka-S platform. In addition, part of the image edition published originally as microfilm is mounted on the Internet Archive as PDFs of the microfilm reels.

We are especially interested in exploring tools such as International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) that can enable users to bring together document texts and images from these editions and enable users to create their own research collections and annotations. In addition, we want to explore how the Edison Papers can engage with linked open data, data visualizations, enhance manual and automated downloads of its data and metadata, and how we might link to related open-access materials in online repositories.

The Research Associate will also be expected to engage with the larger DH community at Rutgers, including offering a workshop related to their work for the Edison Papers. Applicants are welcomed in all areas of humanistic research. Candidates with experience in the history of science and technology are especially encouraged to apply. Recent PhDs in computer science and other technical fields whose work demonstrates a deep and sustained interest in the humanities may also be considered.
