      Hello everyone,

I’m currently looking for a website hosting service that could host my dissertation project. I’m looking for a cheap (grad student-cheap) hosting service with support for MySQL databases, preferably with remote access w/ an external client (like Navicat or Sequel Pro), and FTP access. Can anyone recommend any services?

      Best,
      Kalle

You’ve no doubt already figured this out, but for anyone reading this thread in the future, I’d recommend getting a virtual private server via Digital Ocean. With a VPS, you have sudo access, so you can install FTP, SSH, MySQL, or whatever else you want, provided you’re comfortable entering a couple of commands on the command line. You can even get a whole LAMP setup pre-installed, although only with Ubuntu 14.04. Boxes start at $5 a month, and they’re super fast (SSDs).

There’s also AWS, and you get a year free there, but it may end up costing more depending on your usage, and the control panel is definitely more complicated.
